What are the different types of home insurance?
Typically, home insurance is split into three different categories: buildings insurance, contents insurance and combined buildings and contents insurance.
What does each option cover?
As the name suggests, buildings insurance protects the building itself and items fitted to it – things like doors, baths and basins. Contents insurance merely covers the possessions inside your home, while combined cover deals with everything in one policy.
Which is the right option for me?
If you don’t own the freehold of your home outright, you aren’t eligible for combined buildings and contents cover; if you rent or own the lease to the property, buildings cover should be taken care of already. If this is the case, taking out a contents insurance policy will protect your possessions in the event of damage or theft, which wouldn’t otherwise be covered by the freeholder or managing agent.
