Affordability was a concern and the only option was to stick with Halifax for the current rate, but they only offered a 2-year term for the additional borrowing initially. We appealed the decline from Nationwide by writing a letter and talking to their team. They overturned the decision and approved the mortgage application. A first-time buyer who was a self-employed sole trader struggled to secure a loan due to a high amount of existing debt, which caused his debt-to-income ratio to be unfavourable to lenders.
